CORPUS CHRISTI - Sandy Schumann has been recognized by the NCAA as a Southland Conference honoree for the 2012 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. She is one of 130 representing not just softball, but multiple sports across three NCAA divisions.
"This is a great honor for Sandy to be nominated as NCAA Woman of the Year," Head Coach Stephanie Hughes said. "This is a testament to her as a person and the type of character that embodies Islanders Softball."
The award honors graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.
During her freshman year, she started 37 games and recorded 38 putouts and 104 assists while playing the majority of games at third base. As a sophomore she hit .338 in 65 at-bats while plating 17 runs. Last season, Schumann started 34 games and played in a total of 45 games as the Islanders best utility player. She made starts at first, second and third base as well as in the outfield and had a fielding percentage of .994 while committing just one error. During her senior year she was fourth on the team with 25 hits in a team-high 117 at bats. She was the only Islander to tally a triple during the season.
Schumann was part of SAAC and the Islanders Athlete Mentor Program. She also ran a fundraiser to organize a 5k and 10k Family Outreach Legacy Run for a nonprofit organization. She earned the Kinesiology Outstanding Major Award by her Kinesiology professors in May.
Schumann will graduate on Saturday, earning a Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology with a specialization in exercise science. She will begin work on Monday at the Downtown Club At the Met in Houston working as a personal trainer. Schumann will serve as a fitness coordinator while supervising the floor.
The list of the top 30 honorees, 10 from each NCAA division, will be announced in September on NCAA.org. The NCAA committee will then determine the top nine finalists.
