Fishing Hooks Removed from Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle

FLORIDA (WBBH) - Doctors removed fishing hooks out of the throat of the rarest sea turtle in the world to ensure the Kemp's ridley lives to see another day.

Fresh off the operating table after an emergency procedure saved her life, "Boss" the turtle seemed happy to see our cameras.

"It was challenging because it's not a procedure that I do very often, especially in this type of species," said Veterinarian Joshua Parra.

An X-ray image showed the two hooks imbedded in Boss' throat and intestine.

Dr. Parra removed the hooks Monday morning and said he was concerned during the two hour procedure.

"Are we going to cause more trauma during the procedure, whether it's to the throat, the trachea or further down in the intestines," he said he wondered during the procedure.

Boss was found in the water near Centennial Park in Fort Myers by a fisherman on Friday.

The fisherman contacted the FWC who then handed Boss over to the Clinic for Rehabilitation of Wildlife, also known as CROW.

An endangered species, hunting first depleted the numbers of Kemp's ridleys.

But today habitat loss, pollution, and entanglement are the major threats.
