CORPUS CHRISTI -- Fire officials finally responded today to an elaborate fireworks that was caught on tape New Year's Eve.
We took the video to Assistant Fire Chief Andy Cardiel today. It was on Monday night when
Corpus Christi resident Victor Salter took the video from the top of a tower in his backyard near Everhart and Alameda. It showed hundreds of fireworks going off across town minutes after midnight.
The show happened despite a citywide fireworks ban and heavy enforcement near fireworks stands on the edge of town. Cardiel told us there were more than 270 calls that night for fireworks, but only 6 people were issued citations. Cardiel says there's just not enough manpower to respond to all the calls quickly enough. "To answer your question, were we aware of it? Absolutely. We got many calls on it. And we're seeing the same activity that was recorded, but it is very difficult to enforce that and go out there and address each one of these."
Cardiel did show us some of the fireworks that were confiscated and said that police had several more boxes filled with seized fireworks.
