ALICE - An Alice family is dealing with more than their share of hardship following a fire that engulfed their home on Villegas Street early this morning. The family lost most of their belongings when a fire started in the addition to the mobile home.

The Red Cross has stepped in to provide assistance for the three adults who were living there.

But their problems don't start there. They were also involved in a carjacking on Christmas Eve.

On Monday, Belinda Luna left her 68-year-old disabled mother in her running car as she went to grab some things inside a store. When she came outside the car and her mother, Ricarda Lopez, were gone.

Luna, who suffers from the effects of a stroke, told us she feared for her life as the suspects drove off with her still inside.

Police say they were delayed in helping out with the case because Luna could not provide the license plate or VIN number for her red 2009 Nissan Versa.

About the same time a local bank was able to provide information on the car, police got a call from Christus Spohn Hospital in Alice to let them know an elderly woman was dumped by some suspects outside their facility.

According to the police report, the suspects helped the older woman out of the car before leaving her on the cement. Mrs. Lopez was not injured in the incident.

The Nissan was last seen heading down Highway 44 on the way out of town. Investigators say they later checked with store clerks who reported seeing two thin Hispanic males wearing all black at the store the same morning as the carjacking.

No arrests have been made in the carjacking and the vehicle has not been found.
