Fire Destroys Apartment Unit, Displaces Residents

CORPUS CHRISTI -- A fire ripped through a South Side apartment unit Wednesday night, destroying an entire unit and damaging several others.

Fire officials said the fire started in a closet about 6:30 p.m. when a pile of clothes caught fire and quickly spread to other garments.

Crews were able to extinguish the flames within a half-hour, but they could not salvage the apartment.

The residents, who were inside when the the fire started, were able to get out of the apartment unit before it became engulfed in flames.

The fire department said it will have to evacuate some units because of smoke damage.
