CORPUS CHRISTI - A Nueces County jury sentenced Bradley Fikes to five years in prison this morning for fatally shooting a relative in the face at his home near Bluntzer in 2011.

Fikes faced up to life in prison following his convicted earlier this month for the murder of brother-in-law Robert "Nick" Welch.

During the punishment phase of the trial, a psychologist testified that it was fear that led Fikes to shoot Welch. Fikes' own girlfriend and sons witnessed the murder.

The defense argued for a lighter sentence claiming he was defending himself against a man who had intimidated their client for years.

Fikes will recieve credit for more than one year he's already spent in jail.
