AGUA DULCE - A fiery crash near Agua Dulce this morning killed one Banquete woman and another is in the hospital. Crews spent the morning trying to piece together exactly what happened.
Two vehicles were driving down FM-70 near County Road 42 Monday morning when police say they collided head on and both burst into flames.
"I could see the smoke all the way from 665 coming to this crash this morning," DPS Officer Ramirez said.
Fire crews from Bluntzer and Agua Dulce and DPS, along with Nueces County sheriff's deputies all responded. Authorities say the crash left the driver of the Taurus, Natalia Rangel Rodgriguez, 50, dead and her family members devastated.
"The family's here and they want to see the body but we don't allow that," Officer Ramirez said.
Authorities say Rangel was trapped in the burning car and couldn't be rescued.
"The other lady that died in the vehicle was not able to escape, was not able to be taken out of the vehicle because of the flames," Officer Ramirez said.
Tow trucks hauled away the charred vehicles. Police say the driver of the Tahoe, Melissa Leal Aguilar, 40, suffered some internal injuries and a possible broken ankle, she was taken to a hospital in Alice.
"Both their cars caught fire, the lady that was injured was able, was taken out of the vehicle by someone that drove up on it," Officer Ramirez said.
Officers say it's not clear what caused the cars to collide or why the Tahoe was so far over in the oncoming lane. They recreated the wreck as part of the ongoing investigation to the cause of the crash.
