MCALLEN - Gov. Rick Perry is to testify at a U.S. House Homeland Security Committee hearing in South Texas about the humanitarian crisis from an overwhelming flood of unaccompanied child immigrants.
Perry has criticized President Barack Obama's immigration policies that he says contributed to the problem. He has authorized $1.3 million per week of additional funding for the Texas Department of Public Safety to bolster border security.
More than 52,000 unaccompanied children have been apprehended after entering the United States illegally since October. Three-fourths of them are from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador and say they're fleeing pervasive gang violence and crushing poverty, and many say they're trying to reunite with parents already in the United States.
Obama has asked Congress for $2 billion and additional flexibility to speed children's deportations.
