CORPUS CHRISTI - Some new information on the death of a 4-month old baby girl that we told you about on Friday. Court documents reveal the infant appeared to be abused prior to her death.
The child's father, 17 year-old Joe Angel Rodriguez remains in jail Monday, charged with injury to a child. Originally police said the child was discovered lifeless by Rodriguez when he woke up in the middle of night.
But documents paint a different picture of what happened inside the home on Niagara Street.
Court documents say the 4 month-old infant was with her father, alone home in the 2900 block of Niagara Street from 8 Thursday night until police arrived early Friday morning.
Her father, Joe Angel Rodriguez told police the infant became unresponsive around 12:30 a.m., but he did not call for help for another two hours. That's because he says he was attempting to perform CPR on the baby.
When the infant arrived at Driscoll Children's Hospital she was pronounced dead on arrival. Police say when questioned at the police station, Rodriguez became defensive and irate when asked about the timeline of events from that evening. At one point banging his head on the wall threatening to kill himself.
Driscoll Children's Hospital staff told police the 4 month-old had at least 11 visible bruises on her body, and a superficial tear in her genital area. Police say those injuries are consistent with abusive trauma.
As for the mother of the child, she was not with Rodriguez during the time of the infants death and police have not released any further details on her.
