ROBSTOWN - A portion of Highway 77 just south of Robstown is closed as authorities deal with a fatal crash near FM 2826.
Halo Flight was called out pick up a patient from the scene where a Chevy Tahoe slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler at approximately 70 miles per hour.
Witnesses tell us two groups of students were headed to a culinary arts competition in Waco. One of the group's vehicle moved to get around the large truck, but when the Tahoe tried to do the same, it hit the truck.
KGBT-TV in the Rio Grande Valley reports the driver killed in this afternoon's crash is a La Feria High School volunteer named Jerry Steinbach. Three of the students in the Tahoe with him were taken to the hospital. His wife and other students were in another vehicle not involved in the crash.
We'll have more information from the scene as it becomes available and on our 5 and 6 o'clock newscasts.
