Family Wakes to Find Home on Fire

CORPUS CHRISTI -- Eight-year-old Isaiah Mauk and his twin brother were supposed to be opening birthday presents this morning.

Instead, they were out on the sidewalk, watching their home go up in smoke and flames.

"It's a terrible day, because look," Isaiah said as he pointed at the fire truck behind him. "That never happens on people's birthdays!"

Firefighters were called out to the house 5200 block of Fig Street just before 5 am.

The house is actually a multi-unit building split into three apartments; that's where Isaiah lives with his brothers, sisters and parents.

A total of 11 people were home on the quiet Friday morning, when suddenly Isaiah's sister Miracle woke up to the sound of someone screaming.

"I saw the smoke up there and i freaked out," Miracle said. "And I got scared."

The shouting was coming from Miracle's neighbor Cameron Miller, who saw the flames and tried to put them out himself.

Miller said he ripped out part of the wall and tried dousing the flames with water for an hour without success.

When Miracle heard the shouting, she sprung out of bed and ran to help her family.

"I ran up to my parents' room, woke up my little sister and my mom and dad," Miracle said. "I told them there was smoke, to get out of the house."

It seems that Miracle lived up to her namesake and got all 11 people outside to safety.

But the house didn't fare so well.

Smoke damaged all three units, and one of them was destroyed.

As for Isaiah, he's hoping for a birthday miracle of his own.

"That our new toys that we got for our birthday today don't get ruined."

One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion while battling the fire.

Medics treated him and expect that he will be okay.

Two men in the unit that had the most damage won't be able to return to their home, but firefighters said everyone else--including Isaiah' family--would be able to return.
