CORPUS CHRISTI - The family of a man killed by a hit and run driver Sunday night is pleading that the person responsible turn themselves in.
61-year old Ernest Stephens was hit while crossing Weber near Brushwood. Witnesses told police he was not in a crosswalk or at the intersection when he was run over by a silver Lincoln Navigator.
Right after the crash, the driver pulled over and two people got out, according to witnesses. The driver and passenger ran to Stephens, but got back into the SUV and took off when they heard sirens approaching.
"Whoever did this, like it's gonna be on your conscience. You have to live with that everyday. To know that you have taken someone's father. Someone's grandfather. Someone's father-in-law. Great grandfather," the family told us.
The driver took off in the direction of the SPID access road. Police believe as many as five people may have been in the SUV.
Investigators are now using a computer program to identify every Lincoln Navigator in Nueces County. Each owner will be paid a visit by officers.
