CORPUS CHRISTI - Friends and family of Brian Barrera, the motorcyclist who died after an accident this past week, paid homage to their loved one outside Spohn Memorial Hospital. Our Mitch Bryan spoke with his family and friends about Brian's life-saving organ donation.
Those close to Brian Barrera gathered outside Spohn Memorial Hospital to honor a man who they said left them much too soon.
"Brian was our cousin, strong, happy, energetic, loved to ride. Had a love in his heart for his motorcycle," said Brian's cousin, Lupita Velazquez Ray.
Brian was a long-time member of the "Rollerz Only" Motorcycle Club, and quickly earned the nickname, "Turkey."
"The whole reason why he got the nickname "Turkey" was because he called everybody turkey. So he ended up with the nickname. And like I said, he was just a fun person to be around," said Brian's friend, Shoocha Kuqi.
After the tragic accident, Brian was listed in serious condition until, Friday, doctors declared that Brian's brain was no longer working, and the family made the toughest decision in their entire lives.
To let Brian go and give a chance at life to others in need.
"He was a great person. And it's a tragedy to lose him. But we are going to celebrate, we're going to celebrate it. That's the way we're going to see it. It's a celebration of life," Lupita said.
Barrera left behind a daughter and two little boys, 5 and 6 years old. With their dad gone, the family is stepping up to raise them. And with Brian's life-giving organ donation, his loved ones couldn't be prouder of him.
"Who ever is going to benefit from this, I'm hoping a little bit of Brian is in that heart. A little bit of Brian will be with them and they're going to be a better person," Lupita said.
Brian's family and friends are organizing an annual ride in Brian's honor as well as some benefits to help the family.
The ride will take place Sunday, starting at the Macaw's parking lot at noon at Weber and Saratoga.
