MATHIS - One local man has taken all he has and created a horse rescue ranch for abused and neglected horses.
The horse that started it all was found two years ago. He was skin and bones and abandoned.
"Some day's it's heartbreaking. You see these horses come in that are totally skin and bones that are losing all their hair," said Owner of the Fallen Horse Rescue Tom Armstrong.
That's what was happening to that horse he found two years ago. So Armstrong took him in and gave him a name, Survivor.
"There's a lot of cat rescues and dog rescues and like I said when we started, we asked is there a need for this? Well a week later we took in three skin and bones, so definitely there's a need," said Armstrong.
Armstrong poured his life savings into the Fallen Horse Rescue Ranch. He says this is one of the only horse rescues of it's kind here in the Coastal Bend.
"San Antonio has a horse rescue, Houston has the ESPCA, there's nothing local here," said Armstrong.
His ranch is not government, state, or city funded. He says this is all out of his own pocket for the shear love of the horses.
"You know ever since the automobile horses have become a commodity, they become trash. They're thrown out.," said Armstrong.
But not anymore, because of Armstrong Survivor now has a new home, family and is very loved. Armstrong hopes all of the 27 horses he currently has on his ranch will get the same happy ending.
