DALLAS (AP) - A grand jury has indicted a former state trooper who allegedly performed body cavity searches on two women along a Dallas-area highway.
The Dallas Morning News reports Kelly Helleson was indicted Monday on two counts of sexual assault and two counts of official oppression.
The women who were searched last July during a traffic stop in Irving are suing the state Department of Public Safety and others. Helleson was subsequently fired but is appealing.
A second trooper who had asked Helleson to perform the cavity search was indicted on a theft charge.
Helleson's attorney, Bob Baskett, says the charges against his client are "bogus." He says she received consent during the traffic stop to search inside the clothes of the women.
No drugs were found during the stop.
