Ex-Official On Trial Over $16K Party

SAN ANTONIO - A lawyer for an official fired after $16,000 of public funds went for a San Antonio party says a federal agency never complained about how the money was spent.

Jeanetta Tinsley could get two years in jail if convicted of misapplication of fiduciary property. She was fired in 2009 from San Antonio's Office of Grants Monitoring and Administration after an anonymous complaint.

The San Antonio Express-News reports the trial, which opened Thursday, involves a going-away party for Tinsley predecessor Drew Cameron. The event included a dinner, a band and an ice sculpture.

Prosecutor Barry Elliott says the party was wrongly paid for with Department of Housing and Urban Development funds.

Defense attorney Jay Norton says HUD never contested the event and the party helped introduce Tinsley to municipal officials.
