BROWNSVILLE - Plans for a new university in the Rio Grande Valley are set to be unveiled.
A bill signed into law by Gov. Rick Perry in June creates a new University of Texas institution by merging the University of Texas-Pan American and the University of Texas at Brownsville. A new medical school will also be created.
At events in Edinburg and Brownsville on Tuesday, Perry will be joined by lawmakers and university leadership to ceremonially sign the bill.
University officials are also set to discuss a timeline for the creation of the new university.
Supporters of the bill have said the new university, and most notably the medical school, are critically needed to serve the education and health care needs in the region along the Texas-Mexico border.
