CORPUS CHRISTI - With football practice already underway and classes just around the corner, CCISD is wrapping up the implementation of its new Food And Severe Allergy Management Plan.
Part of this plan involves equipping campuses with the tools and training to respond to a student's severe allergic reaction, and part of the plan involves identifying students at risk for a severe reaction.
It was the death of Cameron Espinosa that prompted the program.
He was on the football field at Haas Middle School last fall when he suffered a fatal reaction to ant bites.
CCISD immediately took steps to find ways to prevent this from happening again.
The results included a decision to purchase Epinephrine shots, or Epi pens.
Each campus will have at least two shots, and each campus will have at least one school official trained to use them.
Nurses, nursing substitutes, trainers, and coaches were all trained.
The district is also urging parents to notify their schools if their kids have serious allergies, and each campus will maintain a list of those students, as well as emergency action plans in the event an Epi pen is needed.
Then again, no one knew Cameron was allergic to ants, so you can only prepare so much.
By Friday, August 22, every campus will have at least one person trained on how to use the epinephrine shots.
According to CCISD, five other districts in the area are now supplying their schools with this potentially life saving device as well.
