CORPUS CHRISTI - CCISD is looking into the possibility of keeping extra epinephrine devices at schools, just in case. But some local allergy doctors say they have some concerns about doing that.
When it comes to having a severe allergic reaction doctors say a little device can save your life. It's an epinephrine pen, or better known as an Epi-Pen. But doctors says as of now, this medication is something that has to be prescribed.
"Just to have them across the board like that, I mean there's a little bit of concern that they may be over used," said Dr. Paul Schibielski with the Corpus Christi Allergy Associates.
Schibielski says the medicine inside these devices is similar to adrenaline but, "It can also cause some side effects." So Schibielski says when it comes to some children who may have a preexisting condition the school may not know about, a shot of epinephrine could kill them.
"These are all theoretical possibilities. Overall these will be much more beneficial than harmful... But there is that chance," said Schibielski.
So he says if CCISD wants to take that chance, the school officials who will have to administer this medicine will need to understand how and when to use it. Local doctors say using these devices are simple. Doctors say you don't use the device unless a person is having a severe reaction like breaking out in hives, passing out, or having trouble breathing. If it's anything less than this, using an epinephrine device is not necessary.
