CORPUS CHRISTI - A man who crashed a company truck last night on South Padre Island Drive is now facing charges of auto theft, driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.
Officers reported they arrived at the crash site after midnight to find a man trying to move a manhole cover out of the stretch of road on Padre Island.
They believe 41-year-old Branden Siegfried lost control of the Ford F-150 and struck the manhole with such force that the airbags deployed. The cover ended up on the other side of the road.
Officers say they tried to stop Siegfried from crossing the road as he staggered back to the truck, but he fought with them, and was pepper sprayed. That apparently did not work. An off-duty officer in the area helped the two on-duty officers get control of Siegfried so he could be handcuffed.
Police say this is Siegfried's second arrest for DWI. The owner of the truck showed up during the investigation to tell officers that Siegfried does work for him, but had taken the truck without permission.
