CORPUS CHRISTI - Tabatha Elliot was sentenced to 15 years behind bars for killing Gilbert Reyna last May in a hit and run accident.
Elliot faced up to 20 years on the manslaughter charge alone, but recieved a 15 year sentence. The jury recommended 10 years for failing to stop and render aid, to which she plead guilty, and 10 years for tampering with evidence.
The sentences will be served at the same time. she will only spend 15 years in prison. She also owes a fine of $30,000.
Even though this situation hasn't been easy for either family involved, Reyna's mother says her sentence was fair.
"She will come out and she will see her children. But my son is not coming out no more. And their children are just gonna have to suffer by themselves," said Beatrice Reyna about her grandchildren.
Knowing Elliot is leaving behind three children of her own, one with Autism, I tried to ask Elliot's mother about them but she wouldn't talk to me.
In the end, Reyna's mother says Elliot will be in her prayers.
"I pray to God that she gets help or something and understands that what she did... She did wrong," said Reyna.
Because she has a criminal past Elliott will have to serve seven and a half years of her sentence before she's eligible for parole.
