Elderly Man Left A Widower After House Fire

CORPUS CHRISTI - An elderly woman died in an early morning house fire on Stratton Drive. In an exclusive interview, we spoke to the woman's husband, who just realized his wife was gone.
When fire crews arrived, they found the home completely engulfed in flames, smoke poured out of the roof and windows. An elderly couple lived inside, but only one of them made it out alive.
"Everybody just called him Mr. King," said neighbor, Jerry Linir.
Mr. King told us he and his wife were home when the fire broke out.
"I was inside the house, I was in the living room, watching TV and then I had to go to the bathroom. Well I got in the bathroom, and in the hallway, smoke was all over the place," King said.
Fire officials tell us that King became disoriented and was not even able to call 911. A neighbor made that call for him. Meanwhile, the blaze got so bad that King and his neighbors were unable to get to his wife in time.
"She was bedfast. She had a stroke and she was in bed and she suffocated in the smoke. She's dead," said King.
"Oh, yeah, he took very good care of his wife. He come over here everyday and take care of her and he was there most all the time, during the daytime to take care of her," said Linir.
Crews finally managed to douse the fire, but not before the woman was killed by smoke inhalation and major burns to her body. It was in the middle of the interview that King suddenly realized that his wife, of more than 60 years, is no longer with him.
"And I didn't know what to do, so I...I'm, I'm...I lost my wife. She's gone," King said.
Neighbors took King away to comfort him and make sure he was not hurt. Meanwhile, to add to his pain, his home is also gone and the elderly man must find a new place to stay.
There's still no word yet on what caused the fire.
