El Paso County Can Proceed With Racketeering Suit

EL PASO - A federal judge in West Texas says a county can resume its $18 million racketeering lawsuit against three people convicted of public corruption.

The El Paso Times reported Tuesday that the lawsuit seeks to recover funds from attorney and former El Paso City Council member David Escobar, attorney and ex-El Paso County Judge Luther Jones and ex-County Commissioner Betti Flores.

Flores in 2007 pleaded guilty to mail and wire fraud in a bribery case. She awaits sentencing.

A judge in 2010 stopped the racketeering lawsuit as the other two criminal cases proceeded.

Jones was convicted in 2011 of attempting to rig a contract and received six years in prison. Jones and Escobar await sentencing after pleading guilty last year to a scheme over a contract for employee health insurance.
