STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team found itself in a see-saw battle with Tarleton State Saturday afternoon with six first half ties and trailed 31-29 at the half.
The TexAnns, however, opened the second half with a 16-4 run over the first six minutes of the second half en route to a 72-55 over the Javelinas who were playing in their third game in four days.
Kingsville finished the week 1-2 and is now 9-14 on the season and 4-9 in the Lone Star Conference. Tarleton is 17-6 on the year and 8-5 in the LSC.
Early 3-point baskets by Lindsey Mahone and Lauren Jay helped Kingsville build an early 8-2 lead.
TSU responded with treys of its own from Kathy Thomas and Raven McGrath to tie the game at eight.
The TexAnns built a 5-point lead with seven minutes left after a 5-0 run broke an 18-18 tie.
Kingsville could not be kept down in the first half and regained the lead at 27-26 on five consecutive points by Mahone. After her three made it a 26-25 game, Mahone swiped a steal and converted a basket for the 27-26 lead.
It was the last time Kingsville would lead.
In the second half, Tarleton's Kiara Wright scored eight points in the first four minutes of the half to start a 15-4 run. Megan O'Dell and McGrath then followed with back-to-back treys to close out the run for a 48-33 lead with 13:40 left.
The Javelinas did not pull to within single digits again until Sheana Jones scored a second-chance bucket with 3:37 left to make it 60-51.
Wright ended thoughts of a rally with a three of her own on the following possession as finished 11-of-25 behind the arc. Kingsville was just 4-of-21 from three and was 0-for-12 in the final half.
Mahone finished the game with 18 points and eight rebounds for Kingsville as she came up just short in her bid for three straight double-doubles. Jay added 13 points and Ashley Viera had 10. Kingsville, which shot 49% on Thursday in a win over Texas A&M-Commerce, finished 32.7% from the floor including 26.7% in the second half.
Kingsville did force 15 turnovers while committing just 10. Viera had a team-best four steals as the Javelinas ended with 10. Mahone added three and Jay two.
McGrath led the TexAnns with 16 points off the bench hitting five treys. Wright had 12 points and 14 rebounds with seven assists. O'Dell finished with 11 and Brianna Bledsoe finished with 10. TSU hit 46.2% from the field and out-rebounded the Hoggies 42-35.
The Javelinas travel to Cameron on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest before hosting Midwestern State on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court in the Steinke Physical Education Center.
