CORPUS CHRISTI - Corpus Christi police say they are cracking down on the drivers who are getting behind the wheel after a few drinks. Police say they are watching for those drivers, and the number of suspected DWI arrest this year proves it.
In new numbers released Monday by CCPD ,DWI arrests are up 24 percent from this time last year.
"For some reason people continue to try to take that chance. And one thing I would say to them is ' you take that chance there is a high likelihood that you are going to get caught," says Captain Mark Gutierrez.
Police say they are catching those drivers, and collecting evidence that will help to convict them like giving breathalyzer tests or collecting blood more often now.
"Officers are really going out there and searching for DWI's," says Captain Gutierrez.
Here's how the numbers break down. Last year between January 1st and April 16th police arrested 265 drivers. This year, during that same time period, 330 suspected drunk drivers have been arrested.
"It seems as though there could be some sort of correlation between the number of DWI's we are getting off the street and the fewer number of fatalities," says Captain Gutierrez.
This new added focus on removing these drivers from our roads is Chief Simpson's way of emphasizing traffic safety.
