MATHIS - As the winds howled at 55 plus miles an hour kicking up dirt, many drivers out on the roads say it looked like a snap shot of the Dust Bowl.
"Yes, Grapes of Wrath," says Lawrence Herstein.
Strong north winds made it difficult for drivers out on the road Monday. Ann Shaw and her girlfriend spent the morning driving driving up from Harlingen in the at times dangerous road conditions.
"It's been very gusty and lots of dust and sometimes we just could see through it," says Shaw.
These two ladies from the North say it was their first time driving through windy and dusty conditions like this.
"We have snow like this, so we are glad it's dust and not snow," says Shaw.
While temperatures were far from the snowy conditions they see in Illinois, Shaw still drove with caution while on her long journey back home.
Joe Rodriguez, who spent the morning in Tilden supervising men at the eagle ford shale says his safety glasses were essential on a day like today.
"I had my safety glasses on and if wasn't for that it would be a lot worse I guess," says Rodriguez
Many of the men he worked with today say working in the gusty conditions not only made things difficult, but made them feel like they were no longer in South Texas.
"Yeah some of the guys were saying they thought they were in West Texas. Because of the wind it's a lot winder up there in West Texas," says Rodriguez.
And it's all from the dry, empty fields. Wind picking up plowed dirt that caused the dusty haze to fall across many parts of the Coastal Bend.
