CORPUS CHRISTI - The Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium will be receiving an upgrade in the coming months, as lights will be added to the facility, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby announced today. The Islanders will make their regular-season debut under the lights on Friday, Sept. 5, when the women's soccer team faces Texas at 7 p.m.
"Adding lighting to Dugan Stadium, which is already one of the top venues in the area, makes an already outstanding facility even more so," Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby said. "It also gives us the ability to host conference championships and increases our ability to host events that will benefit the Corpus Christi community.
"To play our first regular-season home game under those lights against a nationally recognized program like the University of Texas should make for a tremendous atmosphere and a landmark moment in Islanders Soccer history," he added.
The remainder of the women's soccer schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
The addition of lights will greatly expand the options for both the track and field and soccer programs in scheduling, both for games and practices. The addition will allow the women's soccer program to play its midweek home games in the evening rather than the afternoon, allowing more fans to attend contests. The track and field programs will be able to host more in-depth meets that span multiple days, and should attract larger and deeper fields of teams.
Additionally, both teams will be able to host practices during the evening hours, when summer temperatures are not as extreme, helping the overall welfare of Islanders student-athletes. It will also allow student-athletes more flexibility when assembling their class schedules.
The lighting will be provided by Musco Lighting, the same lights that are used at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. Facilities Solutions Group of Corpus Christi will supply the electrical work for the four-pole system, which will also be equipped with the ability to be turned on and off remotely.
The university broke ground on the Dr. Jack Dugan Family Soccer & Track Stadium on May 25, 2012 and it celebrated its grand opening on Aug. 23, 2013. The approximately $8.8 million facility is the home to the Islanders track team and the newly-established Islanders women's soccer program. The 15,300-square foot facility, which features a soccer field enclosed by an eight-lane track, hosts Southland Conference competitions as well as non-conference games and tournaments featuring nationally-prominent programs from across the country. There is also seating for up to 1,000 spectators, concessions, a press box, private suites, locker rooms, training rooms, storage, a ticket office and coaches' offices.
