Driver Fatigue Considered a Factor in Fatal Crash

LIVE OAK COUNTY - Three people were killed in an early morning accident involving a Three Rivers Independent School District bus and a passenger van.

According to DPS, the bus carrying oil field workers home from a shift slammed into the bus as it slowed for a turn off of Highway 72. Investigators say driver fatigue could be a factor in the crash. The van hit the right side of the bus and there are no signs the driver made any attempt to stop before impact.

There were twelve children on the bus. Seven were taken to the hospital by private vehicles with unknown injuries. The rest were transported safely to school.

Of the 7 people in the van, the driver and two passengers died. State troopers have identified the men as: 43-year-old Martin Aguirre, 25-year-old Daniel Zambrano (van driver), and 41-year-old Jose Rios. The other four were taken to hospitals in Jordanton, Beeville, and Corpus Christi.

According to Corporal Charlie Ramirez, only one of the survivors was wearing a seat belt.
