McALLEN - A South Texas prosecutor says the Texas Rangers have shared with him their investigative report on the deadly October shooting from a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter.
Hidalgo County District Attorney Rene Guerra says he hopes to take the case to a grand jury in mid-February. He said Tuesday that he awaits only final ballistic test results.
The DPS helicopter joined in the Oct. 25 chase of a pickup suspected of carrying drugs near La Joya. A trooper aboard the helicopter fired at the truck in an effort to disable it. Instead, he fatally wounded two Guatemalan immigrants hiding beneath a blanket in the truck bed.
There were nine people in the truck, in which no drugs were found. DPS has also asked federal authorities to review the case.
