Dozens of Officers on Patrol for New Year's Eve

CORPUS CHRISTI - As everyone gets ready to ring in the new year, the Corpus Christi Police Department is gearing up for the busiest night of the year at the City Detention Center.

Up to 100 officers will be out on city streets looking for suspected drunk drivers, public intoxication, illegal fireworks, fights, and just trouble in general.

"You would think it would be a time when people are happy about the coming new year and reflecting on the year in past. But whenever there is alcohol involved there is always problems," says Captain David Blackmon.

So far, 1,158 people have gone to jail for drunk driving in Corpus Christi. Officials already have plans in place for a blood technician to collect samples from suspects to get quicker results on blood alcohol testing.

Keep it simple - don't drink and drive.

If you need a free ride, Green n Go Cab is offering the service. Call 299-9999. However, they're sure to be busy tonight. Be responsible and make the right decision by choosing a designated driver before you head out to celebrate.
