Donated Supplies Heading to Immigrant Families in the Valley

CORPUS CHRISTI - A convoy of aid is on its way from Corpus Christi to McAllen to help out some of the thousands of immigrant women and children being housed in shelters here in the U.S.

Two truck loads of supplies and one trailer full of bottled water left this morning for Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen where some of those immigrants are being sheltered.

The supplies collected by the Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi include everything from diapers and baby formula to clothing, canned food, bottled water and toiletries are also being delivered.

Volunteers gathered at the Mother Theresa Church on Sam Rankin over the weekend to get everything ready for today's delivery.

We have a KRIS 6 News team following the convoy and we'll have an update in our evening newscasts. The influx of those thousands of unaccompanied children illegally entering the U.S. through Mexico has become what many are calling a humanitarian crisis.

The flood of Central American children is overwhelming Border Patrol holding facilities.

The vast majority come from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador where they face increasing violence from gangs and drug cartels.

Governor Rick Perry was one of several state leaders who toured one of the shelters and he has a message for lawmakers in Washington.

"The border is not secure. I think that is the single most important message that Washington, D.C. needs to understand today. the border with Mexico is not secure," Rick Perry told reporters.

Perry sent a letter to President Obama calling for him to send one thousand National Guard troops to the border.

He also urged the president to come to the border to see the situation firsthand.
