Don't Leave the Keys in the Ignition While You Get Tacos

CORPUS CHRISTI - Don't leave the keys in the ignition when you step out to grab something at the store. Seems like a simple enough concept.

It is against the law to leave your car running unattended, not only for safety reasons, thieves are looking for easy targets.

Around midnight Tuesday, an officer pulled over a GMC Yukon with a broken brake light. A quick check of the license plate revealed the Yukon was stolen Monday afternoon while the driver stopped in for some tacos at a restaurant on North Staples Street. The driver, 24-year-old Debbie Salazar, was arrested for unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Later in the morning, a man left his company truck running while he stopped into a Stripes store on Northwest Boulevard. The truck was gone by the time he came back outside.

The Sheriff's Office and Corpus Christi police were able to track the truck to a home on FM 1889 using a GPS tracking device installed by the truck owners.

35-year-old Benjamin Govella is accused of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Govella is a convicted felon with a lengthy arrest record for theft, drugs and assault.

Now for a tip on being a responsible gun owner. A resident at the Saratoga Cove Apartments on Wooldridge Drive called police early Tuesday to report someone had broken into his Chevy truck and stolen a pistol. There are no arrests for the auto burglary.

If you plan on leaving a vehicle for an extended period of time, please take your keys, firearms, electronics, purses, wallets, and any other valuables inside with you. Thieves are keeping an eye on your stuff. So should you.
