CORPUS CHRISTI -- A local man went for his routine walk Thursday morning only to find something that was out of the ordinary at a nearby cemetery. Ramiro Ramirez, a resident living near the Old Bayview Cemetery said, vandals took over the grave site.
The cemetery is near Waco and Upper Broadway where several grave sites were broken, crushed or left laying next to the original spots, something Ramirez said is new to the neighborhood.
"The last couple of times I passed through there, everything was okay but this morning it wasn't okay," he said.
Ramirez said, he was walking through the cemetery just a couples days ago and none of the headstones were knocked off their posts. He said, he was taking his grandson for a walk early Thanksgiving morning when he noticed the damage.
"Altogether I think I saw about 6," Ramirez said.
Ramirez believes several people were involved in the vandalism because these headstones aren't light.
"Somebody broke it overnight or a lot of people pushed it to the ground because they're kind of heavy," he added.
The cemetery is owned by the City of Corpus Christi and is a historical landmark for being the oldest federal military cemetery in Texas. It's the final resting place for many early settlers of Corpus Christi and veterans of early wars.
Ramirez said, he's lived in the area for more than twenty years and feels bad vandals have destroyed a piece of history.
"I feel sorry because I mean you know, it doesn't feel good, I feel upset everything messed up and broke down," Ramirez said.
