CORPUS CHRISTI - The district 31-4A tennis tournament was well represented by Ray and Flour Bluff on Saturday. The Texas won the boys team title by just two-and-a-half points while the Lady Hornets ran away with the girl's crown.
Ray's Luis DelaCruz won the boy's singles title as a sophomore, defeating Flour Bluff freshman Noah Ortiz. DelaCruz finished runner-up his freshman year.
Flour Bluff junior Molly Chapman took home the girl's singles title, defeating teammate Sarah Gilliam. It was Chapman's second district crown, she won her freshman year and finished runner-up as a sophomore.
The Hornets won both the boy's and girl's doubles title. Kevin Powell and Andre Abeto teamed up for the boy's crown, while Isabella Guerra and Mellisa Pfluger won the girls title.
Ray's duo of Isaac Vasquez and Chloe Childs teamed up for the mixed doubles championship.
After Chapman's girl's singles title, she was quick to promote the Hornets team effort.
"I'm really proud of my team," she said. "It was a girls singles final all Flour Bluff, girls doubles final all Flour Bluff and boys doubles all Flour Bluff so it's really cool."
DelaCruz had defeated Ortiz in all previous matchups this season, but was still overwhelmed with joy after his singles championship.
"It felt pretty awesome honestly," he said. "Just thinking coming out here that win or lose no matter what just try and take it and give it your all."
The top-two finishers from Saturday's events are headed to the 4A regionals at the Blossom Athletic Complex in San Antonio April 16th and 17th.
