CORPUS CHRISTI -- The distracted driver ordinance is one step closer to becoming law on Corpus Christi streets and most agree, talking or texting while driving is dangerous. But, what about using your smart phone to navigate? That's not allowed under the proposed ordinance either.
That means, if you buy a mount for your dash, it could save you a citation and a lot of cash. Suprisingly, most drivers we caught up with agree with the proposed ordinance.
Motorcyclist Karl Trybe takes every precaution when riding his bike, he says, distracted drivers can be deadly for him. "Anything in the vehicle, it's a distraction," Trybe said.
"I don't think its that dangerous," said driver Stacy Martinez.
"You have to buy the little attachment that a GPS would attach to now, you can't have it in your hand that's why you're distracted," said Captain John Houston with the Corpus Christi Police Department.
While the $500 fine is steep, even drivers who admit to using their cell phones occassionally, like Stacy Martinez, say it's probably a law we need here in our city. "Its a lot of money for somebody to have to pay for having their phone in their hand, but its probably worth it at the end of the day," Martinez said.
Take it from Trybe, even drivers using GPS can be a danger on the roads. "I had a guy almost sideswipe me and it would have been bad and I mean he was looking at his GPS up on his window," he said.
We did some searching on line and found cell phone mounts for a little as $8-10 on-line.
Probably worth the investment if this ordinance passes, since fines for using your phone while driving could run up to $500.
