AUSTIN - Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Senate Finance Chairman Tommy Williams are expected to lay out the draft state budget, revealing the Republican leaders' spending priorities for the next two years.
They will discuss the 2014-2015 budget Monday before the bill is filed in the Texas Senate. The draft is a starting point that will undergo hundreds of revisions before becoming law.
But the draft bill will signal the priorities of the Republican leadership. Dewhurst has promised a conservative budget and Gov. Rick Perry has called for tax cuts. Democrats meanwhile want to restore $5.2 billion in cuts to public schools made last year. Lawmakers have $96 billion in revenue to spend in the next budget cycle.
Lawmakers have already cautioned that much of that money is already spoken for.
