CORPUS CHRISTI - It turns out that botox not only makes you look better, it makes you feel better too! New research shows that the facial filler is actually treating depression.
A new study found that over 50% of Botox patients had significant relief of depression symptoms, after just one Botox injection. Almost 30% of those in the study said they had total remission.
"Anything that makes you look better is going to make you feel better," said local physician Dr. Mario A. Martinez. "I'm not surprised that the study showed that Botox helps people that are depressed."
However, Martinez is skeptical about using Botox as an anti-depressant. He thinks the results were probably more psychological than anything else.
"I don't think there's any effect on the neurotransmitters," said Martinez. "It's much easier to go get injected with Botox than it is to lose weight and exercises, so it's a quick fix."
Other experts think Botox could be more than just a quick fix for depression, but they said larger studies need to be done before they make any conclusions.
