LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Roger De La Cruz shattered the school record in the men's high jump to clinch first place while Daniel Barlow sealed second place in the men's 3000m to highlight the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi track and field teams Saturday at the Texas Tech Red Raider Open. Junior Eric July broke the men's 55m record and several Islanders set personal-best records at the Athletic Training Center to wrap the regular indoor season.
"Roger along with the men's 3000m and 800m highlighted the day," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "Overall the men's team did very well and the women's team is making progress."
De La Cruz clinched first place in the high jump with a school best clearance of 2.14m (7-00.25). The senior shattered his previous school record clearance of 2.09m (6-10.25) set last season at the Red Raider open.
Barlow clocked a time of 8:38.52 to place second in the men's 3000m right behind James Coleman of North Texas with a time of 8:38.24. Sophomore Justin Adame followed in fourth place with a personal-best time of 8:40.82 and Angel Banda crossed the line in 10th place with a time of 8:56.63.
July shattered the school record in the men's 55m in his first meet of the season. The junior clocked a time of 6.59 to finish second in his heat and 18th overall. July broke the school's previous record of 6.64 set by B.J. Arredondo at the Jeff Davis Invite on January 19, 2002. July's previous best time of 6.69 was set in 2011 at the Texas Tech Invitational.
In the men's 800m, Paul Hansel, Brandon Lacy and Bryce Johnston all clocked personal-best times. Hansel led the pack in sixth place with a time of 1:55.81, Lacy followed in seventh with a time of 1:55.88 and Johnston placed eighth with a time of 1:57.66. Wesley McGhee rounded out the Islanders with a time of 2:04.31.
Cordarius Edmondson clocked a time of 49.99 in the men's 400m. He was just shy of breaking his personal-best time of 49.88 set last season at the Red Raider Open. His time marks the third best by an Islander. William Scott followed with a time of 51.00 to win his heat. Like Edmondson, Scott's time was just shy of his personal-best time of 50.93 set also at the Red Raider Open.
Abel Koskey placed 16th in the men's one mile with a time of 4:31.25.
On the women's side, freshman Ashley Mills paced the women's team in the 800m. She placed seventh overall with a personal-best time of 2:20.30, which marks the fifth best time in Islanders history. Alexandra Fernandez followed with a time of 2:29.89. Allison Baker, Teresa Tauriello, Abigail Gennero and Claudia Zavala also represented the Islanders in the event.
In the women's one mile, freshman Kim Ward led the pack finishing her heat in seventh place with a time of 5:37.15 and Cecilia Jones finished in ninth in her first meet of the season with a time of 5:34.45. Jones placed13th overall, while Ward finished in 17th place.
In the women's 55m Ashley Rosebrough qualified for the finals after finishing second in her heat with a time of 7.33. She improved her time in the finals to place 13th with a time of 7.32. Freshman Ebony Collins placed third in her heat with a personal-best time of 7.44. Rosebrough clocked a time of 25.84 in the women's 200m while Collins followed with a time of 26.61.
Sidney Siepert and Shanice Prendergast both placed fourth in their heats in the women's 400m. Siepert recorded a time of 1.00.27 while Prendergast followed with a personal-best time of 1.00.48.
Samantha Hardin clocked a time of 11:25.72 in the women's 3000m and Kayla Fischer followed with a time of 11:30.02. Isabella Baptiste recorded a personal-best time in the women's 55m hurdles. The freshman clocked a time of 9.63 to place seventh in her heat and 24th overall.
The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Scott, Edmondson, Hansel and Lacy clocked a time of 3:24.58. The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Siepert, Rosebrough, Baker and Castillo improved their previous time with a mark of 4:12.01.
The Islanders will next be in action when they travel to Norman, Okla. to compete in the two-day Southland Conference Championships on Feb. 22-23.
