Growing up in "Tornado Alley", Dave Fraser remembers the spring days when the public defense sirens would wail, signaling the arrival of severe weather. Since then he has always been fascinated with the weather and what drives the Earth's dynamic atmosphere. In 1985, Dave said goodbye to Tornado Alley and moved south to hurricane country where he attended the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Two weeks later, over Labor Day weekend, Hurricane Elena rolled through Tampa/St. Petersburg, solidifying Dave's interest in weather. After USF, Dave worked as an environmental engineer, but never lost his passion for weather.
After several years of working as an environmental engineer, he decided to go back to school to pursue a career in meteorology. He enrolled at the Florida State University, and in 1999, earned a Bachelor of Science in meteorology and geography.
Dave's first weather job after FSU took him all the way out to Missoula, Mont., where he was the morning meteorologist for KPAX for four years. Predicting the weather in the Northern Rockies was challenging to say the least.
While in Montana, Dave met Sonja, and just two days before he moved on to his next job in Traverse City, Mich., they got married. Dave worked in Traverse City for two years and worked as the morning meteorologist for WPBN.
Although Northern Michigan is beautiful, he was glad to say goodbye to the relentless lake effect snow and freezing temperatures. He packed up his wife, 3-month-old daughter, Isabelle, and his dog, Larry, and moved to Corpus Christi.
Dave said he is very happy to be back in the south, and since his arrival, he feels right at home in the Coastal Bend where he has fully embraced the South Texas lifestyle. Dave is a huge sports fan; he says playing sports keeps him young. He can be found either on the ice playing hockey, on the court playing basketball or on the diamond playing baseball or softball.
Dave also loves the outdoors, so just about any day of the week you can catch him on the beach, golf course or knee deep in the local junk yard, trying to find an elusive part for his 1970 Pontiac convertible or 1967 Ford station wagon.
