Texas A&M - Corpus Christi right-handed pitcher Daniel Minor became the highest pick in Islanders Baseball history on Tuesday when he was taken with the first pick of the ninth round, 279th overall, by the Houston Astros in the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Minor, the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year and a First Team All-Southland pick this season, came out of McClennan Community College and dominated the league in his first season. He had a 2.20 ERA, the lowest among Southland Conference starters, and had the second-best totals in strikeouts (110), complete games (four) and innings pitched (110.1) with the third-most wins in the Southland, tying a school record with 10 on the year.

The junior was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week four times during the season, the highest among all players in the Southland, and was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on March 12th following a 14-strikeout, complete-game shutout performance against UTSA.

Minor led the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi pitching staff to one of the best seasons in school history, finishing with a 4.21 ERA as a team, and tying the school record of 420 strikeouts that was set a year ago.

He becomes the seventh draft pick in Islanders history. The previous high pick was pitcher Todd Simko, who was taken in the 21st round of the 2011 with pick No. 637 by the Washington Nationals.

The draft will continue through round 20 today, and will finish with rounds 21-40 tomorrow. Players selected in the MLB Draft have until July 13 to sign with their respective teams. If terms are not agreed to by 4 p.m. CST, the team forfeits their rights to the pick, and the player returns to school.
