D-Day Anniversary

WASHINGTON - 70 years ago today the largest ever amphibious invasion led to the end of World War II.

More than 150,000 American and Allied Troops rolled ashore on the beaches of Normandy, France.

President Obama is there this morning - along with other world leaders - to remember that day.

The enemy back then was Nazi Germany today, it's Russia. and even though both countries presidents will stand together in Normandy today, they are no longer united.

Today's iconic backdrop - the beach where nearly 45-hundred Americans lost their lives in a massive invasion that ended World War two.

President Obama, said, "these men waged war so that we might know peace. They sacrificed so that we might be free. They fought in hopes of a day when we'd no longer need to fight. We are grateful to them."

At today's D-Day lunch, cameras caught a brief conversation between Russian President Vladmir Putin and Ukraine's new President, Petro Poroshenko.

The Kremlin says they both want violence in Ukraine to end.

Putin also sat near - and had a 10-15 minute conversation with - President Obama.

It's their first face-to-face contact since Russia's intervention in Ukraine.

The US and Europe are giving Russia a month to recognize Ukraine's new president, stop arms from crossing the border and stop supporting pro-Russian separatists.

John Kerry, Secretary of State, said, "this is an opportunity, we hope, for Russia, the United States and others, all of them to come together in an effort to try to make Ukraine strong economically."

On this 70th anniversary of D-Day, when the world came together to end one country's aggression, there's uncertainty whether the world's two most powerful nations will once again be able to deliver peace.
