CORPUS CHRISTI -- Flanked by senior police officers, District Attorney Mark Skurka on Friday said synthetic marijuana is a "plague that's descended on our community," just hours after authorities raided several area smoke shops.
Police seized several boxes of synthetic marijuana and illegal drug paraphernalia at eight smoke shops stretching from Flour Bluff to Calallen.
"Make no mistake, this stuff is illegal. It doesn't matter what the package says -- the package lies," Skurka said holding a package of synthetic marijuana labeled "aroma therapy."
The raids, called "Operation Imitation Nation," culminated a year-and-a-half investigation by the police department's narcotics vice investigations division in which they purchased packages of synthetic pot and sent them to the Department of Public Safety's crime lab in Austin for testing. When the results came back positive, they got the go ahead to raid the shops.
"Any location that we become aware of that sells illegal products will be quickly and aggressively addressed, and we will take whatever action we need to do to shut them down," said Capt. David Cook.
Police said at least six people were arrested. They will be charged with manufacturing and delivery of a controlled substance.
