CORPUS CHRISTI - A posting for free items on Craigslist led several people to loot a vacant Padre Island home this morning. Police had to intervene to stop people from taking everything, including the air conditioner.
We arrived at the home to find Irene Ibarra wanting to take a look inside. The Craigslist posting said people could find fishing gear, projectors, baby items and more inside the house. The ad asked people to close the doors behind them when they left.
"They put they had electronics and everything," Ibarra said.
There were slim pickings when we got there. The only electronic item we saw was an older model television. Inside the garage was an old computer monitor.
The ad was posted at 4:03 Monday morning. Police say the homeowner posted it after his tenant moved out.
The homeowner called us claiming it wasn't him. "That's a real stupid thing to do, put it on Craigslist, come and help yourself," he said.
By 9:30 am, police responded to a call about the house and found 10 cars parked outside belonging to people taking property from the home.
"I don't think the homeowner anticipated the problem this was going to create for him," Captain Russel Sherman said.
Police say when they got here, they even found people trying to remove an air conditioning unit, and that's the danger, they say, with posting something like this on Craigslist.
"I think that was some of the stuff that the homeowner didn't anticipate that people would touch," said Sherman.
Police aren't sure exactly what's missing, but they say it could be significant, it looks like someone removed a refrigerator and other appliances too.
"There was probably a lot of stuff taken before we got here, we still haven't determined. There was a washer and dryer that's missing, or not in place, we don't know if it was taken," Sherman said.
For now, police are closing all the doors and locking up. The ad has since been removed from Cragislist.
