CORPUS CHRISTI - Former Carroll standout Courtney Hawkins is making the most of his final weeks of freedom before heading to Arizona for his first Spring Training with the Chicago White Sox.
The outfielder was the teams first round draft pick and has spent his offseason bulking up telling me that he has gained about 15 pounds of muscle. To be honest Hawkins looks like a linebacker these days, which means some of his home runs could find new area codes this season.
Hawk says his goal in Arizona is to continue proving himself, admitting that until he makes the big leagues, everything he does it about proving who he is.
"It's my first spring training. I just got drafted a couple months ago so I'm excited to get a full season ahead of me now. Gotta go out there and work everyday like I always do and hopefully get called up.
In 2011 Hawkins say action in 59 minor league games working his way to High A. He hit .284 with 8 homeruns and drove in 33 runs.
He wont know which Chicago club he'll be starting with until he gets to Arizona, but his goal is their Double A team.
