CORPUS CHRISTI - A man is dead after police say he jumped off the Harbor Bridge Friday morning. A local couple having breakfast near the Port saw the man jump to his death.
"Somebody just jumped and then 'pow', there was a big splash you could see the water just you know," says Chris Hensley.
Hensley and her boyfriend Lorzeno Garza were parked under the bridge having coffee when they say a man jumped off the side of the bridge.
"As I was getting ready to take the next sip of coffee and I kind of choked and I said I can't believe I'm seeing this," she added.
Police say the call about a possible jumper on the bridge came in just after 8 a.m. from cleaning crew members nearby.
"I had my phone but I couldn't react, I saw the cleaning ladies there and they have their radios, so I said ma'am I believe that somebody just jumped," Hensley said.
She says although she was too shaken up to make the 911 call, she never hesitated to call on God to help the victim.
"We just started praying for the person and I said 'Lord please have mercy on this person, Lord, save him Lord please Lord, immediately he needs your help right now,'" Hensley said.
Emergency crews responded to the call immediately. Police say the man floated closer to shore where firefighters pulled him out of the water and transported him to Spohn Memorial where he later died.
Officers are investigating the suicide and are working to notify the victim's family. His identity hasn't been released.
Police and TxDOT officials are looking into ways to prevent people from jumping off the bridge. In the meantime. they strongly suggest that people seek help from local agencies including Crime Victims Services and Battering Intervention.
