CORPUS CHRISTI - 18-year-old Austin Byrum and his fiance, 19-year old Skyler Katherine Burghart were finally arrested after fleeing from the San Antonio area. They were found Friday night near the Motel 6 at Paul Jones and SPID in Corpus Christi/
Comal County officials have been searching for these two for three days since Byrum's grandfather was found dead in his home. According to police, the victim isn't related to Byrum, but raised him like he was his grandson.
Police says 69-year-old James Carrol Spencer was stabbed to death.
"Jim was the one that tied to take care of him, but Jim's the one that got the brunt of all this, that's what doesn't make sense to me," says neighbor Michael Dove.
After the killing on New Year's day, the two fled from Comal County, and ended up here in the Coastal Bend.
"Officers were told to look for a white Lexus. The officers showed up and found the white Lexus, got behind it, and ran the license plate," says CCPD Sr. Officer Kirk Stowers.
According to CCPD, police tried pulling them over but the driver sped off and then bailed out near Preston Drive. When police realized the two men in the car were not the people they were looking for, officers returned to the motel.
That is when they spotted a Ford F-250, tried stopping it for a traffic stop, but police say two people jumped out the car and fled the scene near the 1200 block of Harbor Lights.
The two that fled left two teens and a nine month old baby in the car. One woman was caught and she turned out to be 19-year-old Skyler Burghart.
But capturing Byrom, required more help from other agencies.
"Established a perimeter, called out the K-9 to assist in the search. The DPS helicopter arrived in the area. The officers conducted a systematic search, and did apprehend the 19-year-old male," Kirk Stowers explained.
Now that the search is over loved ones are hoping for one thing:
"Justice plays its part in this and takes care of it and hopefully the family heals as best it can," Dove says.
