Council Members Visit Desal Plant in California

CORPUS CHRISTI - Two Corpus Christi council members are just back from a visit to a desalination facility that's being built in San Diego, California.

Mark Scott and Lillian Riojas got a chance to tour the Carlsbad Desalination Plant in San Diego last week. They say what they learned there is going to make our process easier and faster.

"They're ten to twelve years ahead of us. So we have the ability to learn from their experience as we go through our four to five year process," said Scott.

The city of Corpus Christi is just starting its desal study but Councilman Mark Scott and Lillian Riojas wanted to see what they could learn from the Desal Plant that's already being built in San Diego.

They came back with valuable knowledge about permitting issues, financing troubles, and how and why to do public outreach. They were even able bring back a copy of San Diego's water purchase agreement used for the project that took years to create.

"That, that itself... That document is really, really a good guide book... A good playbook for us to have going forward," said Riojas.

They also learned that when it comes to desal technology, it's constantly improving, changing, and getting cheaper.

"And so that when it comes to the point where Corpus Christi will be ready for implementation, I think that we will be able to avail ourselves of the best available desal technology," said Riojas.

So to the people who still may not be on board with desalination yet, Council Members have this question.

"How important is it to a community and industry to have the ability to say no matter what happens, whether it rains or not, we have a portion of our water supply that's reliable," said Scott.

Scott and Riojas say their trip reaffirmed their belief that Corpus Christi is on the right track by looking into desal.
