CORPUS CHRISTI -- Before council members talked about the street user fee, the people who will be paying it, wanted to give their two cents.

Mary Lou Huffman said, "We can not continue this paying and paying. there was this famous senator one time who said a million here and a million there, pretty soon that adds up to real money."

One man commented, the city should put higher taxes on alcohol...and use that money to repair streets instead.

But -- even after the comments -- most council members said charging home owners and business owners for street repairs is he best way to go.

As it sits now...homeowners would pay seven dollars a month...added to their water bills.

Business owners would pay their fees based on a formula which includes the square footage of their building.

Council members still need to work out all the details on that formula.

Mayor Nelda Martinez says things need to move quickly since city leaders and staff already spent more than a year on this issue and nothing's been done yet.

Mayor Martinez would like to see these street user fees in place by May or no later than June.
