CORPUS CHRISTI- Here's a little known fact. Horton Automatics on Baldwin created the sliding door.
At eight in the morning, the ION cable network crew walked into Horton Automatics, shooting video of the warehouse which will be featured in an upcoming show of the "World's Greatest".
The show goes behind the scenes to show their viewers companies around the world that offer unique products.
The show's two-man production crew is featuring Horton Automatics, which created the sliding glass doors in 1960.
George Reed, President of Horton Automatics says, "In the advent of the product. The challenge was that the high winds in Corpus Christi would keep the swing doors in the open position and people were always struggling with them as they walked in and out of a building."
So the thought process at that time was to eliminate the swing door and develop an automatic sliding door.
Since no fingers have to touch a door knob to open or close it, one of the strongest markets Horton Automatics serves is the health care market.
George Reed says, "There's isolation room doors, there's hermetically sealed doors, there's obviously touch free doors so you have that advantage. But, there's a lot of emerging applications throughout the hospitals where the automatic doors and automatic operators can be applied."
Before the sliding doors are shipped out, they are tested for endurance. This door has undergone more than a million openings and closings and still works perfectly.
The ION cable crew spent the day learning about the doors and the ins and outs of how they are made.
Company President George Reed says he is happy his company has been picked!
"We're an industry leader and we love the recognition and we want to grow globally and it's a great opportunity for us to show the world that we have the capability.
We're told Horton Automatics will be featured on the "World's Greatest" sometime in August. Once a specific date is set, we will be sure to let you know.
