CORPUS CHRISTI -- Thieves broke into a $2 million home that is under construction and did thousands of dollars in damage.

The thieves stole copper, and lots of it, from the home off of Ocean Drive.

Homebuilder Carl Schlatter said, "They'd rather come in here and take this little bit of junk copper because it doesn't have that much value, but the damage they've done to the house is so huge."

Police estimate the crook or crooks, breaking a window to get inside this home on Amistad, did around $40,000 in damage.

Schlatter says he's been working on the home for two years and was just about finished, but the copper thief will put him behind schedule.

He said, "The plugs and switches, everything was working and now they've...who know what it's going to take to put it back together."

Schlatter says whoever did it, tried to get as much copper from the place as possible...and wasn't neat about it.

He also said they're not very smart, taking cheap wires and bypassing other expensive wiring, tools and equipment.

Schlatter said, "It's so stupid. You could've taken anything in here. I wish they would've taken the lawn mower or whatever, rather than the kind of thing they've done here."

Schlatter says the only good thing in all this, someone left behind evidence like a palm print on the window and tools used to steal the copper.

He hopes that'll help police.

In the meantime, Schlatter's devising his own security plan.

He said, "What I'm going to try and see about is getting a couple of big dogs in here and letting them loose in here."

Police say -- at this point -- they don't have any suspects in this copper theft.
